Tips on Choosing a Physical Therapist

TIPS ON CHOOSING A PHYSICAL THERAPIST

  1. Make sure your physical therapist is licensed.  Physical therapists are licensed professionals with an education focused on the major systems of the body. They have in-depth knowledge of the musculoskeletal and neurological systems.
  2. Visit the office – meet the therapist and staff. Ask questions about the treatment, length of treatment, follow up, etc.
  3. Ask the therapist if they are familiar with treating your issue. An office that deals mostly with stroke patients may not be as comfortable with a patient who just had a knee replacement.
  4. Ask if the therapist does hands on or manual therapy. You want the attention of the licensed professional to have the best outcome.
  5. You can choose to go anywhere. Your physician cannot insist you to go to his or her facility or a facility they may have an interest in – it is unethical and illegal.
  6. Ask if the office is in-network with your insurance. Many offices will say they take your insurance but if they are out of network a large deductible may apply.
