November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes has become an epidemic in this country. With the increased rate of obesity and the increased rate of sedentary lifestyles we are seeing type 2 diabetes in younger people even as young as teenagers. Maintaining your weight as close to your ideal weight and exercising regularly can prevent type 2 diabetes. If you have not had your fasting blood glucose (sugar) level checked you should! Elevated blood glucose levels may be the first indication that you are at risk or have type 2 diabetes.

Here are some Things You Can do to Prevent the Development of Type 2 Diabetes

  • Stop smoking
  • maintain your blood pressure within normal with medication if necessary
  • Eat a healthy diet that includes whole grains, vegetables, fruits, non or low fat dairy products and lean meats.
  • Be aware of portion control.
  • Exercise regularly including aerobic, strength and flexibility exercises.
